Chock-a-block with fun

Good old Lego is being used to help children click with science.

Woodend Neighbourhood House will host two workshops organised by AHA! Moments, which provides science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workshops with Lego.

House co-ordinator Chloe Green said the AHA! Moments program used by teacher Cameron Frost was a great way to get children learning about science.

“From his experiences of teaching STEM activities, he realised the power of Lego to communicate some of those basic engineering principles and to get kids excited about science,” she said.

“He starts them off by demonstrating some basic engineering concepts … then he gets the kids to essentially become designers, engineers and builders to trial some of these theories themselves and bring all those concepts to life.

“It’s a hell of a lot of fun but they’re learning at the same time.

“It’s all about getting kids into science through something which is play.

“It’s very much hands-on and learning through doing.”

A Lego Engineering workshop will be on July 4 and a Lego Robo Mojo workshop will be on July 9 at 47 Forest Street, Woodend between 9am-3.30pm both days. Cost $90.
