Darley signs bowling star

One the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s biggest names is on the move.

In a big week for two-time Bacchus Marsh premiership player Madushanka Ekanayaka, which saw him share the GDCA’s top individual honour, the Sullivan Medal, it’s been revealed that he will be leaving the Bulls.

Bacchus Marsh’s cross-town counterparts, Darley, announced on Sunday on social media that Ekanayaka had signed with them for next season.

The post said Ekanayaka was looking forward to heading to the Lions and playing with great mate Hasitha Wickramasinghe, who recently re-signed for the Lions.

Ekanayaka will add to the Lions bowling stocks.

In the recently completed season, Ekanayaka claimed the McIntyre Cup bowling award, finishing the season with 44 wickets. He also averaged 27 with the bat.

It’s the third straight season has claimed the bowling award, having taken 58 and 44 wickets respectively the previous two seasons.

It’s been a busy off season for the Lions.

Brian Wheelahan has been appointed coach, replacing Michael Alexander who stood down from the role after two years.

Imports Danza Hyatt and Wickramasinghe have already re-signed, while they have also signed wicketkeeper Anthony Taylor, who has come across Napoleons Sebastopol.
