Trentham stunner: 3 Mulcahys Road, Trentham, 3458

Hollyoak Hill’s gardens are truly awe-inspiring, with hundreds of species represented in a way that engages, invites and, frankly, astonishes.

The 2000-square-metre block, just an amble from the historic Cosmopolitan Hotel and Annie Smithers’ du Fermier, is screened from the street by dense plantings. A walk down the driveway reveals the gardens unfolding as on an artist’s canvas.

Does the house live up to its setting? Oh yes, it does.

The multi-paned cedar windows that look mighty fine against the mid-grey external weatherboards put on a constant show indoors, too. As do the terrazzo flooring and the many french doors linking rooms and gardens. Matte-black fittings and shades of charcoal and pearl grey complement the contemporary approach.

The four bedrooms and two stylish bathrooms flank the floorboarded entry hall. The larger bathroom, fully tiled in dove grey, has a black freestanding tub and concealed-cistern toilet. The smaller, with floorboards, has heated towel rails.

Two of the bedrooms have french doors to a large and fab casual sitting room (with wood heater and terrazzo flooring).

The big kitchen, with a provincial look, has a moveable island bench, black stone benches, a butler’s sink and Smeg 900mm cooker and dishwasher. A concealed laundry is also in here, as is a terrazzo bar under casement windows that reveal a delightful leafy outdoor room with fish pond.

A long, broad gallery from the sitting room leads through elaborately carved doors to the “great room”. So named for its grand proportions, the room has terrazzo flooring, designer wallpaper, a Jetmaster fireplace, a pair of window seats and tall french doors to front garden and lovely rear courtyard with solar-powered fountain. Another courtyard is under the spreading canopy of a medlar fruit tree, while an expanse of soft lawn is rimmed with beautiful plantings. A mollis azalea walk meanders under dappled shade and has many sitting nooks and artistic structures.

In its own aesthetic precinct, a cute powered workshop abuts a covered potting area and small hothouse, while vegie boxes and woodshed are nearby. And an adorable freestanding fitted study with toilet sits amid gardens. Everything is oh so gorgeous.
