Sunbury’s closing the gap

Sunbury continues to rack up the points in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1.

Sitting comfortably in second place, Sunbury added another bunch of points as it had a clean sweep against Essendon (2) on Saturday.

The match was never close, with Sunbury winning 98 (18)-54 (0).

Lee Welsey’s rink won 32-12, Todd Trewarne’s rink won 25-11, Carla Krizanic’s rink won 20-14, while Mark Cowan’s rink won 21-17.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was really even performance.

“Everybody was consistent across the board and there was no standouts,” he said.

“To get 18 points at home against one of the bottom sides is really important to keep the momentum going towards the back end of the season.”

With top side Moonee Valley claiming 16 points, the gap between the two teams is now down to nine.

They face each other in two rounds.

It was a good day for Sunbury with three of their five sides in action getting the win.

It’s been a busy few days for some Sunbury bowlers, with five bowlers playing in region finals on Sunday.

Lee Welsey won his round of 16 match, before falling to Jarryd Davies in the round of eight to be knocked out of the competition.

In the women’s competition there was a real Sunbury flavour with four of the last eight from Sunbury.

In the quarter finals, Sunbury’s Mikayla Long beat Jennifer Salmon, while Krizanic defeated Kim Blennerhassett.

In an all Sunbury quarter final Sharon Whana defeated Lisa Trewarne after scores had been locked at 22 apiece.

The results meant for a second time in eight days that Long and Krizanic would face off against each other in a semi final, having played each other in the semi finals of the club championship.

Long managed to get some revenge for her loss the previous week, getting the win and winning through to the final.

Whana also won her semi final, meaning it will be an all Sunbury final.

Whana and Krizanic will be in action on Monday [January 21] as they play in the final of Sunbury’s women’s club championship.

Mark Cowan and Clive Moffat will play off in the men’s final.
