College watch on possums

A little bit of possum magic is inspiring students at Sacred Heart College Kyneton.

Biology teacher Peter Webb said year 10, 11 and 12 students were involved in the making and placement of possum boxes in Wombat State Forest, with the aim to begin mapping the distribution and health of feathertail gliders in the Macedon Ranges.

“There’s not a lot of research on the possums … they’re very secretive,” Mr Webb said.

“We’ve set up a program to start monitoring and tracking the possums.”

The boxes were placed in the forest by the students in August and were checked in October, with footage of feathertail gliders monitored.

Mr Webb said the boxes were designed to mimic the sort of hollow homes that possums preferred.

He said the students were excited to see possum action in the boxes.
