Beverly Winnell is big on good grammar and manners. The Sunbury resident chats with Jessica Micallef about her involvement at the Macedon Ranges Croquet Club.
What is your connection to Sunbury/Macedon Ranges?
I live in Sunbury.
How long have you lived in the area?
I first moved to Sunbury in 1983 and apart from six months in 1996, I have been here ever since.
What are you passionate about?
My family, good manners and good grammar.
Tell us about how you became involved at the Macedon Ranges Croquet Club?
My friend, Margaret Woolcock, a work colleague, took me to a game.
What does the club do for its members?
The club gives the opportunity to participate in sport, it keeps our minds alert, it fosters friendships and encourages competition in a friendly manner. Croquet is suitable for anyone no matter their age or fitness level.
What other hats do you wear in the community?
In the past I was involved in school tuckshop, reading, cooking classes at my children’s school, little athletics and dancing schools. But these days I am more into supporting my husband Ken, who is heavily involved in the community.
What would people be surprised about you?
I left school after 4th form – known as year 10 these days – to begin a hairdressing apprenticeship but went back in my late 30’s to achieve my VCE – years 11 and 12 whilst working two jobs and then went on to tutor adult literacy classes in a voluntary capacity.
What is the best thing about Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges?
It’s close enough to Melbourne city but far enough away to be bordering on country areas with clean air and lots of green space.
If you could change anything about the area, what would it be?
I would like a hospital with an emergency department closer than Sunshine.
