Sunbury’s first-up victory a top fit for finals drive

Sunbury’s Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 season is off to the ideal start.

In what is seen as one of the toughest divisions in the pennant season, every win is vital.

Sunbury defeated Lalor 90 (14)-78 (4) to get its season off to a winning start.

Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was satisfying.

“It was a good week with four of our six sides getting up,” he said. “It’s always good to get a win under the belt.

“It’s important to get as many home game wins as possible.”

Glennon said the rink of Commonwealth Games gold medallist Carla Krizanic made the difference in the top side’s victory.

It had no trouble in winning 30-15, while Todd Trewarne’s rink won 26-21.

Mark Cowan’s rink lost on the last shot of the day, while Dylan Filuk’s rink lost 20-13.

It was Filuk’s debut for Sunbury following a move from Bendigo East in the off season.

Filuk was part of the triples team that took out the state title last year. He was one of three new players in the top side for Sunbury.

Danny Fortune, who has come across from Romsey, was one of the standouts of the day as part of Krizanic’s rink.

Lee Wesley was the other new addition to the side.

With the team having made finals last season in its first season back in division 1, Glennon said they wanted more of the same this season.

“The minimum target is to play finals, the alternate goal is gaining promotion,” he said.

“We’ve got the new dome coming as well and it should be done by February.”

Sunbury will this week face another tough challenge – Fitzroy Victoria.

Among those they will confront will be Brad Janner, who has won the past four men’s singles titles at Sunbury.

Glennon said Janner, who didn’t play pennant last year for Sunbury, had moved near his new club and had decided to play for it.

Meanwhile, Sunbury young gun Lisa Trewarne had a big week with the Victorian under-18 team last week at the final round of 2018 Australian Under-18 Championships.

She was part of the girls’ fours team that won silver with Victoria winning the overall gold.

Central Highlands Bowls Division gets underway this weekend.

In division 1, Bacchus Marsh will face Gisborne Yellow and Gisborne Red will play Kyneton Golf.

Kyneton will take on Lancefield and Romsey and Trentham will do battle.
