Members of the Sunbury United Sporting Club will be the proud owners of a retired W-Class tram.
The tram is one of about 90 that have been retired from network operations over the past 30 years to be allocated to community groups.
The club’s application was among 1500 expressions of interest
received by VicTrack from around the country and overseas to inherit one of the iconic trams.
Sunbury MP Josh Bull delivered the good news last week.
“We’re proud to have found such a deserving home for one of our state’s retired trams,” Mr Bull said.
“I am delighted to see one of Victoria’s iconic trams come to Sunbury and thank the Sunbury United Sporting Club for all their hard work in putting together such a great application.
“The tram is sure to be a hit with both locals and visitors alike and will become a focal point for our local area.”
The club plans to give the carriage a new lease of life by restoring it as a multifunction community space in Sunbury.
Applicants had to demonstrate that their tram would benefit the community, be accessible to the public or promote the state.
