Cricket’s new age

The Sunbury and Macedon Ranges over 60s cricket club is casting its net a little wider to draw in players over 50 to join its veterans squad.

Club captain David Cordy said there is a need for younger local players to get involved.

“It’s like an outdoors men’s shed” Cordy said.

“The over 60s team play matches every Sunday against teams from all over Victoria both country and metropolitan, however, there’s nothing available for our ‘youngsters’ – the over 50s in our region – to get a game.

“It’s a great way to stay involved in the game we love and at the same time get some exercise and meet other like-minded cricketers.”

Cordy said that veterans cricket is growing steadily across a number of Melbourne metropolitan associations with more opportunities for selection in regional and national teams.

“We’re all not getting any younger,” he said.

“That’s why we need to ensure there will be players in this region coming through, to take over when we’re gone.

“Along with the Sunday friendly games, there are also inter-regional zone games which lead to the selection of Victorian state teams in three age groups, over 40s, 50s and 60s.”D
