Rail trail wins poll pledge

The state opposition has pledged
$5 million towards the construction of the first stage of the Daylesford to Hanging Rock Rail Trail revival project.

The project is aimed at attracting tourism to Macedon Ranges and Hepburn shires by converting the railway lines of the former Carlsruhe to Daylesford railway, which closed in 1978, to a 44-kilometre bike track.

Making the election pledge last week, Macedon Liberal candidate Amanda Millar said the trail was an important project for both areas.

“Hepburn and Macedon Ranges shire councils have long identified the need for an economic driver with businesses in the region needing a boost,” she said.

“The rail trail travels through some of Victoria’s most beautiful places, enabling cyclists to experience and enjoy these iconic towns in a whole new way.”

The rail trail will include a diverse range of tourism experiences, taking in cafes, wineries and attractions such as the Daylesford and Hepburn mineral springs and Wombat State Forest.

“This project provides the opportunity for employment and tourist growth and will help ensure this region is a destination for leisurely bike riders and families across Australia and from overseas,” Ms Millar said.

The project concept plan estimated that the rail trail would bring an extra 62,500 visitors to the region each year.
