Hume artist digs deep

Sunbury artist Elly-Louise Tyquin’s exploration of her emotions through her work has earned her an arts award.

The 23-year-old, who is completing a masters degree in fine arts at RMIT, won a Hume Arts Award for her age group.

Tyquin used several different mediums – including digital art, soft sculpture and the written word – in the works she entered.

“It’s about exploring a few different concepts … particularly architecture and large-scale abstract installation,” she said.

One of Tyquin’s pieces was from her exhibition,

The Unfurling of Grief, which explored her feelings after the death of her mother, Rachel Tyquin, who was 44 when she was fatally stabbed in Sunbury in 2016.

“I decided to explore and express my pathway with grief through my art practice as a way of understanding death,” she said.

Hume mayor Geoff Porter said council had received a record number of submissions for the awards.

“Our municipality boasts a broad array of creative residents, and our arts awards program acknowledges people who are real achievers in their creative field,” Cr Porter said. “This year’s recipients are up there with the very best.”

Other Sunbury winners included Charlotte McKenzie, recognised for her accomplished pastel drawings, and James Milenkovic for his quietly thoughtful and evocative poetry.
