Shed’s men sell well

By Esther Lauaki

Pre-loved items given new life by the guys at Hume’s Men’s Shed are going on sale.

Everything that will be on offer at the Sunbury club’s upcoming garage sale, on August 25, will have been restored or hand-made by the local “shedders”.

The garage sale, now in its second year, will raise funds to support the men’s shed, which has 120 members from Sunbury and the surrounding areas.

Vice-president Mike Newman said the club had built a solid following in its seven years.

“This history of the men’s shed is based around men’s health,” Mr Newman said.

“Retirees finish up with work and stay home. This place gives them somewhere to go and be around like-minded people, make friends and help the community.”

Hume Men’s Shed activities include a carpentry workshop, a metal and welding area, gardens out the back and social areas with pool tables, dart boards and table tennis.

“Everything is very hands-on and our members really enjoy the camaraderie,”
Mr Newman said.

He said “just about anything is for sale”.

“Building materials, children’s tables and chairs, bird boxes and even nests for native bees,” Mr Newman
said.

“We decided to hold a garage sale as part of a number of fundraising initiatives that we do and we are looking to make it an annual
event.

“We try to keep our membership fees as low as possible and so we need to generate funds over the course of the year.”

The Hume Men’s Shed garage sale will be held on Saturday, August 25, at 158 Evans Street, Sunbury from 9am.
