Sunbury Kangaroos kick away for a big win

Sunbury Kangaroos made it two from two in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition after a strong win against Westmeadows.

Both teams entered the match on the back of big wins in round one, so it shaped up as an interesting contest.

The Kangaroos were able to have more impact on the scoreboard in the first half, in what was a tight contest.

They kicked away in the second half to win, 8.14 (62)-1.1 (7).

Kangaroos coach Allan Walters was thrilled with the result.

“It was a tough fight in the first half,” he said.

“They are hard at it and still learning the game, being their first season.

“We kicked away in the second half and had lots of shots on goal which is always a good thing.”

Walters said he thought experience was proving the difference, with most of his side having played together last year.

Both Westmeadows and the Kangaroos’ round one opponent Abefeldie are fielding teams for the first time.

Carly Blythe and Louise Martino kicked two goals each for the Kangaroos as the side continues to get chances in front of the big sticks.

Walters said they would continue to work on goal kicking and said it wasn’t all bad.

“Sometimes it’s perceived pressure and they’ve got a bit more time than they think,” he said. “If we’re getting shots on goal it means we’re controlling the ball.”

Walters said it was a real team effort and a pretty even spread across the board.

“The back six were fantastic and everyone contributed. There were no passengers and if someone is down, someone else will stand up.”

This week they face Craigieburn at DS Aitken Reserve.

“We’re just focusing on Craigieburn who were a good side last year,” he said of the Eagles who finished fifth in a combined EDFL and Western Region Football League competition.

The Sunbury Lions got their first win of the season, knocking off Keilor.

The Lions showed why they’ve been a strong side for a number of years, winning 8.7 (55)-3.1 (19, keeping the Blues scoreless in the first half.

The Lions this week face Westmeadows.
