Sunbury and Macedon Ranges footy wrap

Couldn’t get to the football yesterday? Here’s a quick look at the results from across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

Ballarat FL

It was heartbreak for the Sunbury Lions as they couldn’t hold on against a fast finishing Redan in the Ballarat Football League.

In a match honouring MH17 victims Maree and Albert Rizk, the Lions were the better team for most of the day and held the lead until late in the final quarter before falling short, losing 17.5 (107) – 16.7 (103).

Lions coach Rick Horwood said he was so proud of the side against the top of the table Redan.

“I thought we had it,” he said in the rooms after the game.

“But we dropped off with our discipline and good sides will hurt you when you do that. It was a valuable lesson we did that and paid the ultimate price.

“I’m really disappointed for the players and the club. It came down to a second goal from a free kick.”

RDFL

Riddell is fast becoming the giant killers in the Riddell District Football League. For a fourth successive week, the Bombers have knocked off a side which is also in the top six.

The Bombers left Romsey shell shocked in the second quarter as they kicked seven goals to one to open up a 46 point lead at half time.  The Bombers maintained the lead for the second half winning 14.12 (96) – 86. (54).

Macedon got the monkey off its back with victory over Sunbury Kangaroos at Tony Clarke Oval. The 4.8 (32) – 1.7 (13) win was the first for the Cats over a side inside the top six.

Other results went as expected with Rupertswood, Diggers Rest and Broadford having massive wins, while Lancefield won a close one against Wallan.

EDFL

East Sunbury recorded its third win of the season in Essendon District Football League division 2 against Keilor Park.

It’s the first time in the Thunder’s three year history they have beaten a team other than Burnside Heights.

Ash Fleming was best on ground for the Thunder in the 11.10 (76) – 10.9 (69) win.

Bendigo FL

Kyneton is in the top five in the Bendigo Football League after a win against South Bendigo.

The Tigers who are one of several teams looking to finish in fifth spot, won easily against South Bendigo, winning 19.12 (126) – 8.15 (63).

Ben Weightman kicked eight goals in a best on ground performance.
