Rural perfection: 1361 Kilmore Road, Riddells Creek, 3431

The magnificence of this 165-hectare spread simply can’t be overstated. On three titles – Nardoo, Killarney and Tipperary – the farming and horse property is steeped in history, perhaps best embodied in the writing of World War II prisoners still to be found on what are now the walls of one of the artist studios, the 400-year-old trees, and the many pre-war outbuildings.

This story will concentrate on Nardoo, where an Alistair Knox-designed abode, an ornamental lake and 2.5 hectares of park-like gardens, with sculptures, form a quintessential country retreat.

There’s also an amazing array of support buildings for equine pursuits – and even a huge shearing shed that would be perfect as a quirky function venue.

In the grounds are a nearly 24-square three-bedroom, two-bathroom house; a two-bedroom weatherboard cottage; manager and worker cottages; a freestanding artist studio and an upper-storey artist studio.

Three stable complexes, quarantine/day and holding yards, multiple sheds and equipment bays, excellent fencing (including electric and kangaroo-proof on perimeter), stockyards, paddocks with laneways and shelters – the list goes on. Vegie garden, chook coop, bee hives, an orchard, multiple dams and water tanks, a bore, productive pastures and two creeks are also here – along with a tennis court and three-hole golf course.

The classic main house has indoor-outdoor integration all sewn up. The huge main living hub – with hefty recycled posts, pitched timber ceilings found virtually throughout, banks of windows and clerestories, a brick fireplace and Matcham Skipper chandelier – is a wonderful
space.

The large country kitchen-diner, with brick flooring, has a giant timber-topped island bench, a Falcon cooker, Miele dishwasher and a wood heater. A butler’s pantry adjoins a mud room and storage-rich laundry.

A sitting room with library shelves and gas log fire is a cosy winter retreat, while four bedrooms include the main with fitted dressing room and powder room.

An attached one-bedroom cottage, with separate entry, has a living room, kitchenette and en suite.

The entire property is truly a showcase of country perfection.
