Big block, big heart: 120-122 Main Road, Riddells Creek, 3431

Planted at the same time as the house was built – early last century – old oak trees spread out their branches and mingle with other species to lend much leafy beauty to the gardens of Corvalis. The house, on a block of about 2830 square metres, is a great old dame, retaining original features that underpin the quirky/rustic/boho feel throughout.

Cedar boards – either natural or painted – on high ceilings, along with fireplaces, wide Baltic floorboards, deep skirts and strapped or boarded walls juxtapose with modern elements such as laminate floorboards for practicality and, in an extension section, a bank of windows drawing in light from the back garden.

Under a lace-trimmed verandah, entry is to a traditional central hallway, flanked by three large bedrooms, two of which have fireplaces. One has twin walk-in robes, another a built-in. A fourth bedroom, with compact en suite, accesses the deep back verandah. Also along the entry hall, the main bathroom has kept cedar ceiling and sash window, and added terracotta-toned floor tiles and a contemporary timber vanity, tub and shower.

Double doors from a family room open to a fab kitchen-diner where the blue-and-white palette, timber cabinetry and slow-combustion stove pile on rustic appeal. A modern cooker and dishwasher add to the appeal.

A carpeted sitting/dining room, with neighbouring open study space, has french doors to a large carpeted living room with fireplace, and the aforementioned bank of windows, along with more french doors to a leafy brick-paved courtyard.

Further down the back garden, there’s an old barn, a chook pen, workshop and garage – but don’t get lost finding them among the many trees and banksia roses. Pretty darn good…

A split-system, natural gas ducted heating, water tanks and alarm system are included, while the block has unlimited potential for adding more lifestyle elements – or even for development, subject to council approval.

A primary school and eateries are just down the road and the station is a 10-minute stroll away.
