December 7, 1977

Werribee’s volunteer coastguard service made a dramatic rescue on Sunday afternoon after a boat overturned in rough seas off Werribee South. However one of the three occupants of the boat had drowned before the coastguard had been alerted to the problem by a 15-year-old boy who swam to shore to raise the alarm.

December 2, 1987

The death of a 20-year-old mother of one at the intersection of Derrimut Rd and Baggott Dve last week led to 80 outraged Hoppers Crossing residents protesting about road safety and threatening to barricade the road on Saturday morning. The residents planned to block off the access road at nearby Werribee Plaza Shopping Centre, which they claimed caused a dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians.

December 3, 1997

Escapee and convicted murderer Andrew Jeffrey was nabbed for brawling on Sunday by a Wyndham constable on routine patrol in Footscray. Constable Andrew Logal, of Geelong, called the arrest “a good get” after being told at 3am last Monday that he caught one of Australia’s most wanted fugitives.

Werribee Racing Club has pleaded for immediate funding to redevelop its course after Racing Victoria placed an indefinite ban on racing there after last Wednesday’s shambolic meeting. RV director of racing operations Leigh Jordon said the track – which has not had any major amendments for 24 years – could be out of action for the next 12 months, with turf problems threatening next year’s Werribee Cup and VRC meetings.
