As fire season approaches, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges’ water supplier has warned it cannot guarantee water supplies during a bushfire.
Western Water has advised residents not to rely on water mains because their capability can be damaged by fire.
Customer, community relations and operations general manager Graham Holt said while the supplier was well-prepared for fire season, Western Water’s networks could be affected by fire.
“In the event of a fire, if electricity is cut or water infrastructure is affected, pumps and other equipment may fail, cutting the mains water supply,” Mr Holt said.
“If there is extremely high demand for water from customers and the CFA during a fire, water pressure may drop.
“We also recommend keeping 10-15 litres of drinking water stored during summer in case water quality is affected by bushfire.”
Mr Holt said residents should consult their local CFA about their options for protecting their family and property during a fire.
In preparation for fire season, Western Water said it had back-up generators ready, water storage tanks at high capacity, and staff on call during the fire danger period. The water supplier said residents could help the community to be prepared for fire season by keeping watch of fire hydrants near their homes to ensure they were not covered by debris and vegetation.
