A Sunbury student who successfully balanced VCE studies and volunteering has been given a head start as part of a La Trobe University early admissions program.
Madeline Wain, a first-year bachelor of science student who plans to become a medicinal chemist, was given automatic entry under the university’s Aspire program, which rewards applicants who have volunteered with the CFA or St John for at least six months.
Ms Wain has been a St John Ambulance member since she was in year 10. She says her ongoing work with the organisation’s Sunbury unit has been beneficial, allowing her to help the community and acquire valuable skills.
‘‘Originally, I wanted to be a paramedic, so learning and performing first aid really opened my eyes to what’s involved,’’ Ms Wain says.
St John Ambulance chief executive Stephen Horton says the program is a great way to foster the development of students and promote the benefits of volunteering.
‘‘Our participation makes another positive contribution to our community by building resilience in our future leaders,’’ he said.
Applications for this year’s program close August 31.
