Kites ready for flight

Spirits are set to soar once again at the Brimbank Kite Festival.

For the seventh straight year the CALDERS Community group will run the family festival, with organiser Anni Ang saying it was shaping up to be another massive event.

“We normally get at least 500 people along, weather permitting, so it is a big day,” she said.

“We’ve partnered with Watergardens shopping centre to promote it in the lead up, and we’ll have our usual kite demonstrations … we’re hopeful local MP Natalie Hutchins will be down to open the event once again.”

The kite festival started as a project for a group of Brimbank residents undergoing leadership training provided by Brimbank council in 2011.

They identified flying kites as a fun outdoor activity that had no barriers for participation,
so colourful kites flying over Delahey Recreation Reserve have become a popular attraction.

“People can see the kites from far away, and if they come up, they see kids, parents and grandparents all having fun,” Ms Ang said.

“I’ve had people in past years come up and tell me they used to make and fly kites as a kid, and they love showing their own children how to get them flying. It’s a great day out for the family.”

The Sydenham Kite Festival will run on Sunday, November 12, from 11am-4pm at Delahey Recreation Reserve. Details: www.facebook.com/SydenhamKiteFestival/
