Sunbury Lions roar on medal night

Three Sunbury Lions brothers were among the award winners at the Ballarat Football Netball League’s Henderson Medal night.

The night started well for the Lions, with three players among the four winners of the inaugural Club 18 division’s best and fairest award.

Brothers Kevin Barker and Matt Sammut polled 10 votes each, along with Lions teammate Aaron Blade and Bacchus Marsh’s Leo Nunn.

The night got better for the Lions, with Anthony Sammut joining his brothers as an award winner by taking out the George King Medal for the reserves best and fairest.

Sammut led on 23 votes heading into the final round and thought his chances may have been dashed when he failed to poll in the final round, with his brother Matt getting the three votes.

He had done enough to hold on, finishing three votes clear of Bacchus Marsh’s Marc Dransman.

Lion Michael Edwards finished equal runner-up in the Dick Rees Memorial Trophy for the under-18.5 best and fairest. Edwards played just 11 games in the under-18.5s, earning promotion to the senior side late in the season.

In the seniors, Alik Magin was named in the team of the year on a half-forward flank.

Lions skipper Andrew Duhau polled the most votes in the Henderson Medal, polling 13 votes, nine behind the winner, Redan’s Nathan Horbury.

The good night continued for the Lions, who won the Merv and Mary Howard Memorial Senior Club Championship, which is based on points allocated for wins across all netball and football grades.
