Jack Charles’ life has been a bit more colourful than most.
The Indigenous television and theatre star has been convicted 22 times for burglary and drug related offences and was once addicted to heroin.
Charles was taken from his mother when he was just a baby as part of the Stolen Generation.
Following a crime spree and drug addiction that landed him in and out of jail, Charles became a highly acclaimed television and theatre star and established Australia’s first Indigenous theatre.
Now 73, the Aboriginal elder is endeavouring to share his stories to deter youth from travelling down the same path. Later this month Charles will speak about his life experiences at Kyneton library with Cate Mercer, editor and publisher of health and wellbeing magazine The Art of Healing.
“We are looking forward to hearing Jack share aspects of his incredibly inspiring life –particularly his time behind prison bars,” said Goldfields Library Corporation program and events manager Tammy Higgs.
