Kyneton’s women’s football team celebrated its first ever win on Sunday.
Having gone through their first two seasons win less, the Tigers only had to wait until the second round of the inaugural Northern Country Women’s League season to taste victory this year.
Tigers co-captain Natalie Korinfsky said it was amazing to have a win after all the hard work they’ve done the last two years. She’s been part of the team since the first season.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling and everyone is so excited,” she said. “It was an indescribable feeling, all the girls were screaming when the siren went.
“Half the team is brand new and hasn’t played football before. It’s quite an inexperienced side which makes it more amazing.
“Hopefully it’s the first of many wins.”
Playing in a league where the teams are spread out, the Tigers had to travel more than two hours to get to Kerang for the game.
The day started well with the team having a full side plus bench for the first time this season.
Once the game got underway, Korinfsky said early on it looked like they would be in for a long day.
“They kicked the first two goals and most of our team thought here we go again,” she said.
“We changed a few positions around and managed to kick a goal and a few points.
“We had a big rev up at quarter time and got ourselves back into the game.”
The Tigers kicked 4.7 to one goal in the second quarter to open up a 22-point lead at the main break. With one hand on their first ever win, the Tigers didn’t let up and ran away with the game, winning 8.19 (67)-3.0 (18).
“They remained scoreless for the rest of the game. By the end it was quite comfortable.
“We did a lot of fitness stuff in the preseason. That is a key part to winning.
“We might not have the best skills, but if we can run out games we give ourselves a chance of winning.”
Jenna Tonkes kicked three goals in the win, while Matilda Maidment and Rebecca Lebish chipped in with two goals each.
Skye Sinclair was best on ground.
Korinfsky said they were still looking for more players and volunteers to help with the running of the side.
