Mice have been known to frolic in female changerooms at Gardiner Oval in Gisborne – and the town’s football and netball clubs have had enough of it.
The clubs – Gisborne, Rookies and Giants – and their supporters are working hard in a bid to offer their female players upgraded facilities.
Parent Sharyn Stiedl said that the female changerooms were unusable, forcing female teams to use the male changerooms.
“We currently have a mouse-infested tin shed measuring approximately five by three metres,” Ms Stiedl said.
“It really is nothing more than a netball equipment storage facility.”
She said the new clubrooms would be built by players’ parents at weekends.
“Between the parents, we have builders, electricians, plumbers,” she said.
The clubs have contributed funds to get the project started, but they will only provide the shell of the proposed building.
The clubs are asking for donations of $100 to pay for a metre of concrete.
They are inviting the Gisborne public to a session of evening netball and football matches from 5pm on May 26 to raise awareness for the project.
