Wallan through in grand style

Wallan won through to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade grand final in emphatic fashion.

The minor premier needed just over 60 overs to get the result against Macedon and seal a home grand final in the process.

Macedon was left to rue its decision to bat first. Not one of the top seven batsmen reached double figures as Macedon was in trouble at 7-40.

Daniel Trotta and Oliver Clough provided some resistance, but once Trotta was out it was the beginning of the end. Macedon lost its last three wickets for one run to be bowled out for 69.

Clough, batting at nine, finished 21 not out as one of only two batsmen to reach double figures. Scott Gilchrist was the pick of the Magpie bowlers with four wickets.

Macedon needed early wickets if it was any chance. But while the Magpies were at one stage 2-21, they were never in trouble of not making the necessary runs, doing so with seven wickets in hand.

They were 3-141 when the two teams decided to end the game with another day’s play scheduled.

Matthew Robertson made an unbeaten 79 for the Magpies with Clough taking two wickets for Macedon.

The Magpies will play Lancefield in the grand final. They will be looking for their third title of the season, having won the GDCA district T20 title and the Cricket Willow division 2 T20 title.

A premiership would mean the Magpies would return to McIntyre Cup after two seasons in B grade.
