Sports upgrades, including a skate park and BMX track, are among new projects at Lancefield Park sharing in a $800,000 state government windfall, compensation for last year’s Lancefield-Cobaw fire.
In all, seven projects have been funded, including upgrades to netball and tennis courts, the main oval, cricket clubrooms, the playground and bowls club, along with the skate park, BMX track and buying a new tractor.
Work on a $450,000 project to build new female-friendly change rooms and public toilets at Lancefield football, netball and tennis clubs began last month.
The projects follow the release of the emergency management inspector-general’s final report into the Lancefield-Cobaw fire inquiry.
In the report, the IGEM found that the environment, land, water and planning department had taken on board 19 of 22 recommendations and all 10 commitments.
The three final outstanding recommendations will be implemented as part of Safer Together, Victoria’s new bushfire management approach.
Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said it is important the government acts swiftly in responding to the commission findings, to rebuild community trust.
“The Lancefield Park renewal project has brought the community together to have their say on what matters to them, and how they want to use their park today and into the future.”
