Reducing the numbers of abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens is the target of a low-cost desexing and microchipping session in Sunbury.
Hume council and The Lost Dogs’ Home have joined forces to tackle the breeding cat population for three days, until Thursday October 27, at Sunbury Neighbourhood House.
Residents will be able to take moggies to be desexed and microchipped for the subsidised cost of $50. Healthcare cardholders can have the service provided for free.
Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the council is hoping as many as 75 cats will be desexed as part of the initiative, which was set up to reduce the large numbers of unwanted kittens born across the municipality every year.
“Cats can breed very quickly,” Mr Isola said.
“With the summer breeding season almost upon us, there is no better time to desex your cat. I call on residents who own a cat that is not desexed and microchipped to book a time to attend, and take advantage of council’s cost-saving offer.”
