Dig deep for Poppy Appeal

Tin shakers and poppy sellers are gearing up for the Returned and Service League’s annual appeal, which starts in coming weeks.

Woodend RSL volunteers are all set for the Poppy Appeal, which will run from late October. Thousands of the much-loved red poppies will be sold to raise funds for current and former servicemen and women in need.

Victorian appeals manager Peter Smith says the appeal is a cause that resonates with all Australians.

“Each and every person who purchases a poppy feels a great sense of pride in wearing it in the lead up to and on Remembrance Day,” Mr Smith said.

Woodend RSL branch president Barry Meldrum acknowledges the commitment shown by members and volunteers who make the Poppy Appeal a success.

“It is humbling to see the wave of support and enthusiasm by the locals who support the Poppy Appeal in so many ways,” he said.

Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium after World War I, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war.

Purchase a poppy from Woolworths, Officeworks, RSL sub-branches or from volunteer collectors.
