Sunbury Ladies Badminton brings out best

Competitors travelled from across Australia for a morning of badminton at Sunbury Ladies Badminton annual tournament earlier this month.

The tournament at Boardman Stadium attracted more than 60 women for a morning of fun, exercise and some light-hearted competition.

Regular Sunbury players were joined by counterparts from Queensland, Charlton, Bendigo and Geelong, as well as surrounding areas.

Competitions were played across eight courts, with each court having a winner and runner up.

Fiona Carroll defeated Bronwyn Pokorzynski, Donna Nowlan was too good for Claire Cherubin, Lyzza Thomson beat Heather McInualty, Wendy McKenzie defeated Lina Wu, Carol Dodiles beat Vicky Franks, Sandy Peterson, was the winner over Siobhan McGrory, Nancy Zhao beat Louise Bell, and Flora Whittingham was too good for new Sunbury player Claire Tarr.

The club’s Cheryl Ward said the

event had been very successful, and players stayed around for lunch and a chat afterwards.

She said the club had been supported in a number of raffles, with goods donated by local businesses including Masters, Chemist Warehouse, Country Style and O’Shannassy meats.

The club, which has been going for more than 30 years, is also looking for new players, both for social and competition badminton.

“Beginners are most welcome, and we have racquets and basic coaching available,” Ward says. “Competition is on Mondays, while on Thursdays it’s more social with different levels on each court.”

Racquets, basic coaching and child minding facilities are available. Details: Cath 0409 256 123.
