Kyneton did its finals hopes no harm with its upset win over Strathfieldsaye in the Bendigo Football League.
The match against Storm was the first in a three-match run against the top three sides on the run home, and it started the right way for the Tigers.
Kyneton flew out of the blocks with eight scoring shots to two in the first quarter to open up a 26-point lead.
The Storm found the scoreboard in the second quarter, but were still trailing at the main break.
The second half was a defensive tussle with goals hard to come by. For a second time, the Tigers held the Storm goal-less in a quarter, and had the game in hand heading into the last quarter.
They increased their lead by one point in the final quarter, to win 10.12 (72)-6.9 (45).
Nathan Thompson was the main man up forward for the Tigers, kicking four goals. Rhys Magin put in his second best on ground performance in as many weeks to lead his side to the win.
The win gives the Tigers a bit more breathing space when facing Kangaroo Flat in the hunt for a finals spot. The Tigers currently sit fifth, only percentage behind fourth, but a game and percentage ahead of sixth-placed Kangaroo Flat.
The Tigers this week take on second-placed Golden Square.
Gisborne didn’t get the result it was after against South Bendigo. Playing one of the two sides they have already beaten this season, the Bulldogs were hoping to record a third win.
It wasn’t the case with South Bendigo, kicking four goals to one in the final to win, 13.15 (93)-9.6 (60).
Jake Conolan was the only multiple goalscorer for the Bulldogs, with Shannon Greetham named best in the loss.
In the netball, Gisborne added another win to its tally as it looks to its finals spot. The Bulldogs put in the most dominant performance of the round, smashing South Bendigo 80-34. The win ensures the Bulldogs stay in third position with two rounds remaining.
