Two tradesman fleece elderly victim in Sunbury

A Sunbury resident is warning vulnerable elderly residents to be vigilant after claiming that two tradesman fleeced her of $800 for a service she never asked for.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said two tradesman came to her home on August 1 and offered to clean her spouting and reseal a pathway outside the house.

“I hadn’t called anyone to come to my house,” she said.

“These two men knocked on my door and they were in [high-visibility] work uniforms and offered me these services for $300.

“They were there for a short time and then kept telling me there were more problems and that it would cost me more and more.

“I ended up giving them $800 in the end.”

A friend of the woman’s checked the spouting and found that leaves and dirt had not been disturbed.

The sealing of the pathway was not completed either, she said.

“I called the number that was given to me that day, but there has been no reply and the phone has been turned off,” she said.

The woman said she reported the men to police but was told there was not much they could do.

“I’ve been very lonely lately because I recently lost my sister so I feel very stupid to have believed them,” she said.

“I just want to warn elderly people who live alone not to repeat my mistake.”
