Mother of two Sonia Hennessy on discovering Kangatraining

Gisborne mother of two Sonia Hennessy discovered Kangatraining while researching exercise courses … now she’s
offering mums a training option that includes their bubs.

The 43-year-old fitness trainer spoke to Esther Lauaki.

What’s your connection to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges?

We moved to Gisborne about five years ago.

We moved to Australia from the United Kingdom, then lived in St Kilda before looking for a home that was close enough to Melbourne to be able to commute, and far enough out to enjoy the country lifestyle.

I’m a qualified fitness instructor and a certified Kangatraining instructor, so launched the program in Sunbury.

What is Kangatraining?

Dubbed ‘baby-wearing aerobics’, Kangatraining is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular fitness and muscular capacity and strength are enhanced.

Babywearing has been shown to have benefits on minimizing the risk of postnatal depression.

Kangatraining at Sunbury and Macedon Ranges donates $1 per person per class to Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia.

What made you want to be a Kangatrainer?

I launched Kangatraining in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges because I found there was nothing like it in the region.

I know that being active is critical to keeping up with the demands of two young children, but I found limited fitness classes that cater for mums with babies.

Participating in exercise classes with babies or young children can be a nightmare.

It’s difficult to take a baby to an exercise class, especially when they can’t participate.

Why do you think that this program will help mothers in Sunbury and Macedon Ranges?

Kangatraining is focused on strengthening the muscles that have been stretched, pulled and weakened from pregnancy and childbirth.

It’s pelvic floor safe and lots of fun! We don’t take ourselves too seriously.

It’s all about having fun and getting stronger, without feeling pressured.

The workout has been developed in consultation with midwives, and physiotherapists, so the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, as well as correct posture, are all given special attention.

Unlike traditional mums and bubs’ classes, Kangatraining mums don’t have to worry about a red-faced, screaming baby during class … they get to snuggle and be part of the action.

What’s your favourite thing about Gisborne?

Space and the close-knit community feel of the area.

We spent a lot of time living in apartments both overseas and here in Australia.

We wanted to get back to having a lot of space where we live.

Gisborne gives us the best of both worlds … space and proximity to the city.

Classes are held in Sunbury on Monday mornings and Gisborne on Thursday mornings. www.kangatraining.com.au
