Macedon MP calls on residents to register as organ donors

The gift of life is about the most significant offer any person can make to another.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas signed up to the Australian organ donor register last week as part of Donate Life, and she wants Lancefield and Romsey residents to do the same.

“The average wait time for organ donation is between six months and four years,” she said.

“This is something that can be changed, simply by registering and having a conversation with your loved ones.”

Ms Thomas is very aware of just how valuable and life-changing blood and organ donations are.

“Every time I visit sick children in hospital, or meet a local recipient of an organ donation, I am reminded that, as healthy individuals, we have the capacity to make real change in people’s lives.”

More than 1200 Australians received transplant organs from 435 donors last year.

While most Australians say they are willing to donate organs, their families need to be sure of their loved one’s wishes.

The Australian Organ Donor Register helps families understand what their loved one wants.

Family permission is required before any organ donation goes ahead, regardless of whether the dying or deceased person is a registered donor, or not.

“It’s a simple message, register now, and make sure you talk with your family about it.

“It literally takes five minutes to register online, but the impact could last a lifetime.” Ms Thomas said.
