Sunbury United seeks help after break-ins

Sunbury United Cricket Club has asked Hume council for help to beef up security at Langama Park after two recent break-ins.

President Chris Linton said members were heartbroken after the club rooms were hit by thieves on March 20 and again on March 21.

He said a television and drinks valued at $1500 had been taken, while repairs to locks and doors would cost ‘‘thousands’’.

“To have this happen right as we were getting ready to wrap up for the year, it’s just heartbreaking,’’ Linton said.

He said thieves broke into the club’s canteen on the Sunday night, taking drinks and personal items left in change rooms after grand finals played earlier that day.

The club reported the incident on Monday, but the thieves returned later that evening, badly damaging doors and taking a television.

Linton said the club was seeking help to install a security door at the entry of the council-owned building.

‘‘We’re a volunteer organisation and we run everything as tight as we can,’’ he said. ‘‘This sort of thing is just a real kick in the guts.’’

Council’s city infrastructure director Peter Waite said he would work with the club to resolve the issues.

He said the council had boosted security at a number of sites.

‘‘We are extremely disappointed that there has been an increase in break-ins and vandalism at sporting clubs in Sunbury,’’ he said.

If you have information about the break-ins, call Sunbury police: 9744 8111.
