Sunbury Softball Association will host the Victorian under-19 championships in April.
The championships, on April 16 and 17, will be the first of any kind held at the Goonawarra diamonds and they’re a big boost for the club.
Secretary Catherine Kelly said it was the first time the club had seriously applied to host a major event and it was thrilled to be selected.
She said the club hoped it would help strengthen the local association, and she encouraged players to look at trying out for state teams.
“It’s massive for our club,” she said. “It’ll be a full weekend event and we’re hoping people will come down to see teams from across the state.
“It gives further exposure to our club and shows our junior players what can be achieved.
“Hume council is right behind this and is supporting the competition. We’d like to host a major competition every year.”
Even though it’s hosting the championships, Sunbury will not field its own under-19 team in the event.
“We’re putting a team in the under-15 state championships, which are coming up, and we’re having a team in the open championships next week,” Kelly said
Meanwhile, Sherwood Knights won three of the four grand finals in the association’s local competition, under-13, under-17 and men’s competitions.
Jackson Panthers won the women’s competition.
