Golf goes back to back

Kyneton Golf Gold saved its best for last to clinch back-to-back wins in division 1 of Central Highlands Bowls.

Golf went in to Saturday’s grand final against Gisborne as underdogs after losing the semi-final between the two teams.

But it was a different story this time, with Mark Andrews, Wayne Turner and Anthony Mathison winning their rinks as Golf clinched the title 96-74.

Matthew Bacon led the only winning rink for Gisborne.

The grand final was Golf’s 14th in the past 16 years, while Gisborne was playing in its first division 1 grand final.

Golf secretary John Trounce said he thought experience would count.

“[Gisborne] had a great year and they cleaned us up in the semi-final,” he said. “We tweaked our side a little bit and we thought finals experience could help … grand finals are a bit different and you get a good crowd there. Our side is used to that.”

Trounce said it wasn’t until near the end that Golf felt victory was theirs.

“We kept them to scores of ones and twos and managed to pick up a few threes and fours ourselves.”

Meanwhile, Sunbury’s season is over in Bowls Victoria division 2. After winning the first round of the divisional finals against Ferntree Gully on Saturday, they exited the competition with an 85-76 loss to Mitcham on Sunday.
